New Show Hacker News story: Show HN: A Minimalist Arcade Game

Show HN: A Minimalist Arcade Game 2 by inn3r | 0 comments on Hacker News. 3anglez is an HTML5 game that uses Phaser as the main game engine that handles the logic and rendering while Howler is used for the sound. It was ported to Android using Cordova as a container which can access the native API of an Android smartphone and Crosswalk that acts as the WebView rendering the WebGL context. Implementing Cordova plugins such as Notifications, Leaderboard, Analytics, was hard because they would always enter into conflict with each other and collapsed the whole game. After days of fixing, they now act nice with each other. The whole idea of this game was to provide hours of fun using only basic shapes. So I picked the polygon with the smallest number of sides (the triangle) and I build the entire world using it. The triangle is also responsible for the l33t style game name (3anglez). The gameplay is pretty simple. You have to avoid the spikes, the rocks and the enemies (they have some ba

New Show Hacker News story: Launch HN: Slite (YC W18) – Note App for Teams

Launch HN: Slite (YC W18) – Note App for Teams 113 by christophepas | 66 comments on Hacker News. Hi HN! I'm Chris, founder of Slite ( https://slite.com ). We’re building a tool for modern teams to write down and retrieve things that matter. I've launched two companies in the past and basically ran them on note-taking apps. The first was a hiring SaaS and the second an on-demand fashion-delivery service, and while the two were pretty different, I needed to write down a lot of stuff: interview notes, mentoring, email and article drafts, notes on customers and so on. I had this habit because notes are versatile, incredibly user-friendly, and immediate. They made up my personal knowledge base but the biggest frustration I had was sharing those with teammates. So I decided to build a note app that would work with teams from day 1. This is in line with the current problems in team collaboration. A lot of people were thrilled to dump email to get on Slack, but recent conversation

Jimmy Kimmel brings new political profile to Oscar-host role

'Unsolved' digs back into murders of Tupac and Biggie

Image
"Unsolved: The Murders of Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G." wants to bring a "True Detective"-like approach to these sensational cases, and winds up feeling more like the latest miniseries version of "Law & Order." That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there's an earnest banality to this USA network limited series, which tackles the story largely from a law-enforcement perspective, while operating on three separate planes. from CNN.com - RSS Channel - Entertainment http://ift.tt/2EVea2W

Usually things related to government actions as most of my readings come from the NYT, Washington Post, or things posted here on HN. I'd like to learn more about Chinese culture but do not know where to start, some of the topics I'm interested in are: - Confuscism - Mao - Chinese Communism & Past Political Systems - Modern Chinese Business Culture - Modern China (in general) - The Chinese Economy (past, present & future) Please feel free to suggest books, documentaries, articles, blogs and other types of info that can help!

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Use a banker to sell a seed stage company?

Ask HN: Use a banker to sell a seed stage company? 6 by anon72 | 1 comments on Hacker News. (Going anonymous for obvious reasons) My B2B software company raised a pre-seed round, built a product, and got some great customers. Our industry's long sales cycle, along with resistance to buy from startups, has made raising our next round of funding harder than we thought it'd be. An investment banker with deep knowledge of our industry thinks they can sell our current product and team for ~20X what we've raised. As a good steward of my investors' money, I'm inclined to give it a shot. Has anyone on HN used an investment bank to sell a seed stage company? I would have thought it was crazy, but this bank is really confident in their ability to elicit a transaction.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Is Optimizely's $50,000/year minimum short-sighted?

Ask HN: Is Optimizely's $50,000/year minimum short-sighted? 4 by abtester | 7 comments on Hacker News. We are a small company that is looking to implement an AB testing platform. Since we have experience with Optimizely before, we signed up for a trial and was contacted by a Sales Rep who indicated that Optimizely now has a $50,000/year minimum commitment. Our budget doesn't support that commitment and so we will go with a competitor instead. I feel this is short-sighted of Optimizely, not having a lower-priced, lower-featured option as customers will become familiar with competitors and small companies turn into big companies. Does the HN community feel the same?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: When did you realize you needed glasses?

Ask HN: When did you realize you needed glasses? 14 by gerbilly | 27 comments on Hacker News. I'm pretty nearsighted, but a first I didn't realize it. The day I realized I needed glasses, it was the last day of sixth grade. Most of the kids had left the classroom and I was alone with the teacher and a girl named Francine. The teacher was asking us how we found the class, and I said: "It was great, but I found it hard to read the board from the back row," and Francine says, "What do you mean, I can read the board fine from here. You need glasses!" Stupidly I hadn't considered that they wouldn't put pupils that far from the blackboard if it were impossible for them to read from that distance. I just figured they put the smart kids in the back rows because they could get by without reading the board and I spent the whole year transcribing as the teacher spoke, and passed my sixth grade without ever being able to read the blackboard.

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: Finding a CPA for my startup

Ask HN: Finding a CPA for my startup 4 by Meekro | 1 comments on Hacker News. I'm running a solo startup at the seed stage, and the C Corp structure has brought so many new tax concepts that I'm still trying to get my head around: payroll taxes, franchise taxes, etc. I tried finding a local CPA through yelp, but was disappointed with the results. New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How to improve emotional intelligence to be a more creative inventor?

Ask HN: How to improve emotional intelligence to be a more creative inventor? 12 by mclightning | 10 comments on Hacker News. Hi, Hear me out HN, I am curious about this. Assumption 1: You need strong emotional intelligence to relate to others. Assumption 2: You need to relate others to identify their problems. Assumption 3: You need to identify problems and frustrations of mass populations, to make very successful niche products and services. Examples: Uber, UberEATS, AirBnb. Of course there are other advantages of these services, increasingly so as they grow. But I believe it solves a lot of frustration for people when it comes to engaging cab drivers, hostels etc. Question : How do you work on your emotional intelligence to better understand frustrations of others?

New ask Hacker News story: Ask HN: How are you tracking the source of your SaaS paying customers?

Ask HN: How are you tracking the source of your SaaS paying customers? 8 by pushkargaikwad | 2 comments on Hacker News. Our SaaS tool's primary source of traffic is from email campaigns, search engine, web backlinks and website chat. Now I am struggling to find the accurate source of paying customers like who came from which source? May I know how you are doing it? I am Ok finding the original source or even the last source (search engines -> chat). As a last option, I can always ask our paying users by sending a direct email but I thought if there is a better way to do it which can give more insights on the lifecycle of paying customers. Thanks
